From USA Pro to Bill Watts' territory
After USA Pro Wrestling collapsed, Tom Zenk moved south in April 1984 and appeared on Mid-South Wrestling cards across Louisiana and Mississippi, with an additional Houston date under promoter Paul Boesch.
His surviving record begins in Baton Rouge on April 2, where he defeated Jerry Grey. The following night in Shreveport, he again met Grey and won with a sunset flip. These were opening-card assignments, but the surrounding line-ups placed the rookie among some of the territory's defining names: Bill Watts, Jim Duggan, Terry Taylor, Magnum T.A., the Midnight Express, the Rock 'n' Roll Express, Butch Reed and Buddy Landell.

A sunset flip in the first event
The April 3 card at Shreveport Municipal Auditorium was advertised as The Last Stampede, with Cowboy Bill Watts and Stagger Lee against the Midnight Express in the feature bout.
Zenk opened the show against Jerry Grey. The next day's report in The Times recorded that “Tom Zenk used a sunset flip to pin Jerry Gray in the first event.” It is the clearest surviving contemporary description of a match from this short Mid-South run.

valuable experience
Zenk's documented Mid-South run occupies less than three weeks. His father was hospitalized with a serious medical condition, forcing his return to Minneapolis. Nevertheless, his progression is visible: from repeated opening bouts with Jerry Grey and John King to pairings with established Mid-South stars Butch Reed and Buddy Landell.
It was another compressed apprenticeship—travel, unfamiliar buildings and experienced opponents—before his return to Minnesota and the AWA later in 1984.
